Scientific Method: Salt Solution Evaporation

1: P.P.Q.

-To find the difference between a rock and a mineral.
Experiment:
-Adding table salt to water, using evaporation to see the results.

2. Hypothesis

We think that tomorrow we'll see salt crystals that are actually salt deposits and no water because it will have evaporated

3. Materials

- 4 magnifying glasses
- 10 rocks/minerals
- 2 spoons
- 2 cups
- 1 plate
- 1 piece of masking tape
- tray
- boiled water
- 1 tablespoon of salt

4. Procedure

We're pouring hot water with the table salt into a spoon. The spoon should be two thirds full with the salt water. Tape the spoon onto the plate so the round part is on the plate and half of the handle is not. Set it somewhere undisturbed to let it evaporate. The next day, looking for the results in the spoon.

5. Data/Observations

Seeing most of the spoons, a lot of the salt crystals were four-sided. They were either rectangular/square. We even saw a perfect square.

6. C.E.R.

We found that molecules form in different ways. The salt just forms a square.

Telling the Difference Between Rocks and Minerals

Number:
Properties:
Prediction:
Why?:
1
Milky white... Rough... Glazed
Mineral
Has flakes of mica, possibly halite
2
Beige... Rather smooth... Glassy
Mineral
Lots of cleavage, mica flakes
3
Black and Gold... Smooth... Shiny
Rock
Very thin... lots of layers
4
Gray... Bumpy... Dull
Rock
Very dull, solidly gray
5
Red... Rocky... Glittery
Rock
Made of many rocks
6
Black... Smooth... Glassy
Rock
Igneous rock, obsidian?
7
Light beige... Dull... like wheat cereal
Rock
Very light, pumice?
8
Beige with chunks of other colors...
Very pebbly... Dull
Rock
Seems to be many pebbles cemented
9
Straw colored... a little glittery, sharp-edged
Rock
Seems to be made of shells
10
Light brown... Chalky... Sparkly
Rock
Mica flakes, very chalky
11
Reddish salmon...Dull... grainy
Rock
Has lots of layers, like a sedimentary rock
12
Gray... Jagged... Dull
Rock
Very thin, possibly metamorphic rock, shale
13
Grayish white...rough
Rock
Like rock #1
14
White... Rough... Glittery
Mineral
Has mica flakes, possibly halite
15
Light gray... Glittery... Rough
Mineral
consistent sheen of glitter, has mica

Stories in Stone

Introduction

Meet Mindy, an attention seeking metamorphic rock, Sid, a sedimentary rock who's cool as ice, and Izzy, an igneous rock with a fiery attitude. Mix these colorful characters together and who knows what will happen? At each others throats, these rock siblings share their stories in their humorous VoiceThread interview. Coming soon at http://voicethread.com/.

Mindy

Mindy is an average metamorphic rock. She is ambitious, determined, and let's face it, a little stuck on herself. Although she seems to be a spoiled brat, it looks to us as if she is innocent and sweet inside, that is, before she body slams her brothers to be exposed in the spotlight.....

Izzy

Izzy is the youngest in the rock family, but by far the least important. If this little guy stumbles upon anything that he thinks is wrong, unfair, or just plain "yucky", he'll explode in a tantrum that would make YOUR little brother look cute!

Sid

Sid is the "cool" one in his rock family. He doesn't have much to say, but thats pretty reasonable when your sister's spoiled, your little brother's a lit fuse, and it seems like your the only sane one in your family, but that's how most of us feel....
